Basic Qualifications

1. Do you have a professional engineering degree? A "Yes" answer to this question requires that the degree must meet one of the following two criteria:

Be from a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, or
Include differential and integral calculus and courses more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics:
- Statics, dynamics,
- Strength of materials (stress-strain relationships),
- Fluid mechanics, hydraulics,
- Thermodynamics,
- Electrical fields and circuits,
- Nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties), and
- Any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics

2. Do you have a combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience -- that furnished

A thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and
A good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

3. Are you currently registered as a professional engineer in any state, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico?

3a. If so, did you achieve this registration by means other than a test, for example, through state grandfather or eminence provisions?

4. Have you passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination or the test required for professional registration which is administered by the Boards of Engineering Examiners in the various states, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico?

4a. If so, have you completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree in engineering technology (BET) from an accredited college or university that included 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences?

NOTE: A "Yes" answer to this question requires that the courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

6. Have you successfully completed a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field (for example, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology)?

1f. Have you completed all the requirements of a Federal baccalaureate level student trainee program, including 1040 hours of work experience, 320 hours of which were at the GS-5 level?

Specialized Professional Engineering experience is experience with non-routine engineering work that required and was characterized by (1) professional knowledge of engineering; (2) professional ability to apply such knowledge to engineering problems; and (3) positive and continuing development of professional knowledge and ability.

To be creditable, specialized experience must have been at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the next lower grade in the Federal Service.
