Examples of GS-5/FG-5 (Equivalent F Band) Specialized Experience
This level is typically a trainee or developmental level, characterized by work on a limited range of assignments under close supervision, for example:
- Reviews material for grammatical correctness and appropriate reading levels.
- Gathers, extracts, checks, and assembles program and/or management information and data and enters data in proper format.
- Uses standard analytical techniques to resolve issues and/or identify problems relating to programs.
- Collects, analyzes and evaluates operational or administrative information.
Examples of GS-7/FG-7 (Equivalent F Band) Level Specialized Experience
This level is typically an advanced entry-level trainee. Work is less limited in scope than the lower levels and accomplished more independently, but still subject to close review and specific guidelines, for example:
- Develops and edits talking points, speeches, statements, news releases and articles for publication.
- Maintains statistics and reports on expenditures of funds, reconciling discrepancies to ensure effective use of funds.
Examples of GS-9/FG-9 (Equivalent F Band) Level Specialized Experience
Working independently with self direction requiring a limited amount of supervisory guidance, for example:
- Writes materials on a variety of subjects such as reports, articles, pamphlets, scripts, or speeches.
- Gathers and develops information by researching factual materials through available sources, including library resources and subject-matter experts.
- Writes materials such as reports, articles, pamphlets, scripts, or speeches in approved formats and in language suitable for the intended audience.
Examples of GS-11/FG-11 (Equivalent G Band) Level Specialized Experience
- Writes and edits talking points, speeches, statements, news releases, articles for publication, and other written materials.
- Performs a wide variety of duties related to publishing, including researching, writing, editing, copy editing, proofreading and other related duties associated with making information ready for publication and dissemination.
Examples of GS-12/FG-12 (Equivalent H Band) Level Specialized Experience
Work involving a wide range of assignments or a few highly complex assignments, requiring planning and organization, setting priorities, and working without clear or specific guidelines. Work at this level is typically reviewed only to assess impact on overall organizational objectives. Examples of such work include:
- Assists the organization's Manager in establishing goals and objectives for the organization which are consistent with agency goals and objectives.
- Plans and controls all activities associated with the high-level review, research, preparation, approval and dissemination of formal agency materials.
- Serves as technical editor of written materials with primary responsibility for the technical accuracy and quality of the printed matter, ensuring conformance to agency policy.
Examples of GS-13/FG-13 (Equivalent I Band) Level Specialized Experience
Work involves performing broad and comprehensive management studies that often cross functional and/or organizational lines. The work requires analysis of interrelated issues of effectiveness, efficiency and productivity of substantive mission-related programs, which are often complicated by conflicting program goals deriving from changes in legislative or changes in demands for program services. Work is typically reviewed only to assess impact on overall organizational objectives. Examples of such work include:
- Prepares long-range and short-range planning/resource guidance in accordance with broad Agency objectives.
- Develops and recommends improvements to systems and/or processes to improve operational efficiency.
- Works as a contributing specialist on large work activities or as a project manager or team leader to large projects/programs/activities.
- Participates in the planning and development of communications policies and strategies with respect to issues of national or regional significance and to specific situations and occurrences.
- Ensures that material developed for the web accurately and effectively communicates the message and mission.
Examples of GS-14/FG-14 (Equivalent J Band) Level Specialized Experience
Work typically involves highly complex and challenging activities under the minimal direction of a manager or executive. Assignments typically involve expert knowledge to develop new and innovative approaches to problems or issues that often cross organizational boundaries and impact the accomplishment of Agency strategic objectives. Guidance is in the form of broad policies and work is typically reviewed only at completion for success in achieving planned results. Examples of such work includes:
- Evaluates the impact of long-range program goals and objectives and the political, economic, and social consequences of changes in the type or amount of Agency or organizational services provided.
- Analyzes requirements and supporting resource allocation to develop an overall system/concept for major program activities or the Agency.
- Provides guidance to less experienced professionals or leads large projects/teams.
- Leads a working group of writer-editors in producing and disseminating Web files, providing policy, editorial, and technical guidance. Monitors web output for accuracy and appropriateness for international audiences and adherence to International Information Program (IIP) guidelines for content and style.
