Retired Military Air Traffic Controllers Program
The FAA has established a program for hiring retired military controllers. Below, we’ve answered some frequently asked questions about the program.

Employment of Retired Military Air Traffic Controllers Program

What is the purpose of the program?

Military controllers were leaving military service in order to be hired by FAA prior to their reaching age 31.  The purpose of this program is to reduce DOD’s losses of experienced active duty military air traffic controllers by providing special opportunities for those active duty military air traffic controllers who serve a full career with the military.

Who is eligible?

You must meet all of the following criteria:

 1.  Be on terminal leave pending retirement from active duty military service or have retired from active duty military service on or after September 17, 1999.

 2.  Have received either air traffic control specialist certification or a facility rating according to FAA standards.

In addition, you must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application and meet all application, qualification and position requirements, including applicable medical and security requirements.

What positions are covered?

Civilian air traffic control positions in the FAA whose primary duties require that the employees be actively engaged in the separation and control of air traffic.  This includes the positions of immediate supervisors of any employees actively engaged in the separation and control of air traffic.  Essentially, these are terminal and en route positions covered by PL 92-297.

How do I apply?

You can apply by sending an application to the Aviation Careers Division in Oklahoma City, OK.  Click to view the vacancy announcement for this program and to obtain the proper forms.

Will I be a permanent employee?

If you are hired under this program, you will be placed on a time-limited appointment, meaning the appointment will have a specific termination date attached to it.

How long is the initial appointment?

No more than 10 years

Additionally, no appointment may exceed the last day of the month in which you reach age 56.

Can appointments be extended?  For how long?

Yes.  In successive appointments for up to 5 years at a time.  An appointment may not exceed last day of the month in which you turn age 56.

I am a former military controller who was hired as a civilian controller at DOD.  I was already over 31 when DOD hired me, so they gave me an age waiver.  Previously, FAA would not hire me.  Can I apply now?

Yes, if you meet the eligibility criteria above.

What will I be paid?

You will initially be paid at the top of the ATC-3 pay band, currently: $50,725 This is basic pay.  FAA employees in some areas receive cost of living allowances (COLA) or upward adjustments called locality pay.  Both vary by geographic location.

If hired, can I move to other active controller or related supervisory positions?

Yes, but you must be in a time limited appointment.

If hired, can I move into other FAA positions?

Yes.

Can I ever receive a permanent appointment at FAA?

Yes, but only in positions not covered by the maximum entry age rules.

If I am hired, do I go to the FAA Academy for initial training?

No.  You enter the appropriate phase of field training as determined by the receiving facility.

What employee benefits will I receive?

Most employees earn leave.  If your initial appointment is for longer than 1 year, you will be eligible to participate in the health insurance, life insurance, and retirement programs.

Please note that, depending on your age at hire and length of service, you may not be eligible to retire from the Civil Service when you reach age 56.
