Air Traffic Controllers Program

What is the
purpose of the program?
|
Military controllers were leaving military service in
order to be hired by FAA prior to their reaching age 31.
The purpose of this program is to reduce DODs losses of
experienced active duty military air traffic controllers by providing
special opportunities for those active duty military air traffic
controllers who serve a full career with the military.

Who is
eligible?
|
You must meet all of the following criteria:
1. Be
on terminal leave pending retirement from active duty military service or
have retired from active duty military service on or after September 17, 1999.
2. Have
received either air traffic control specialist certification or a facility
rating according to FAA standards.
In addition, you must be a U.S. citizen at the
time of application and meet all application, qualification and position
requirements, including applicable medical and security requirements. |

What positions
are covered?
|
Civilian air traffic
control positions in the FAA whose primary duties require that the
employees be actively engaged in the separation and control of air
traffic. This includes the
positions of immediate supervisors of any employees actively engaged in
the separation and control of air traffic.
Essentially, these are terminal and en route positions covered by
PL 92-297.

Will I be a
permanent employee?
|
If you are hired under this program, you will be
placed on a time-limited appointment, meaning the appointment will have a
specific termination date attached to it.
|

|
How long is
the initial appointment?
|
No more than 10 years
Additionally, no appointment may exceed the last day
of the month in which you reach age 56.
|
|
|
Can
appointments be extended? For
how long?
|
Yes. In
successive appointments for up to 5 years at a time.
An appointment may not exceed last day of the month in which you
turn age 56.

I am a former
military controller who was hired as a civilian controller at DOD.
I was already over 31 when DOD hired me, so they gave me an age
waiver. Previously, FAA would
not hire me. Can I apply now?
|
Yes, if you meet the eligibility criteria above.
|
|
What will I be
paid?
|
You will initially be paid at the top of the ATC-3
pay band, currently: $50,725 This is basic pay.
FAA employees in some areas receive cost of living allowances
(COLA) or upward adjustments called locality pay.
Both vary by geographic location.

If hired, can
I move to other active controller or related supervisory positions?
|
Yes, but you must be in a time limited appointment.
|
|
If hired, can
I move into other FAA positions?
|
Yes.
|
|
Can I ever
receive a permanent appointment at FAA?
|
Yes, but only in positions not covered by the maximum
entry age rules.
|
|
If I am hired,
do I go to the FAA Academy for initial training?
|
No. You
enter the appropriate phase of field training as determined by the
receiving facility.
|

What employee
benefits will I receive?
|
Most employees earn leave. If your initial appointment is for longer than 1 year, you
will be eligible to participate in the health insurance, life insurance,
and retirement programs.
Please note that, depending on your age at hire and
length of service, you may not be eligible to retire from the Civil
Service when you reach age 56.
