Job Duties:
The incumbent will serve as an Air Safety Investigator in the Accident Investigation Division, and as such, performs around-the-clock operations of time critical accident investigations, ensures that aviation safety issues are identified, conducts safety oversight of transportation practices, works to improve accident investigation procedures, works closely with industry and other government agencies to promote aviation safety, develops and recommends policies and procedures governing aircraft accident and incident investigations. Serves as the principle FAA liaison to the NTSB representative, and to FAA headquarters during the course of the investigation. Reviews and comments on draft accident reports developed by the NTSB concerning specific investigations. Reviews flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder transcripts released by NTSB. Participates in pre-hearing conferences and depositions concerning the assigned accident/incident investigation. Contacts and briefs FAA witnesses. Responds to all requests for information; letters, memos, Congressionals, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) inquires, and senior staff. Represents the FAA during U.S participation in foreign investigations. Develops FAA safety recommendations to prevent future accidents and to promote aviation safety.
Minimum Qualifications:
CERTIFICATES AND RATINGS:
For all grades and specializations, applicants must possess a Commercial Pilot Certificate with instrument rating, the appropriate military rating, or other certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements of the Commercial Pilot Certificate, e.g., an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate.

FLIGHT EXPERIENCE:
All applicants must possess the Minimum Flight Hour Requirements: Total Flight Time as pilot-in-command in aircraft of any weight or category is creditable for this requirement. Each 2 hours acquired as a copilot, an FAA certificated flight engineer on a commercial air carrier, or a military flight officer on a military air carrier may be substituted for 1 hour of flight time in meeting the minimum total flight time requirements. Only flight hours acquired as pilot-in-command are creditable.

The Minimum Flight Hour Requirements Include:

1. Total Flight Time: 1500 flight hours as pilot-in-command or copilot in aircraft of any weight or category is required.
2. Pilot-In-Command: 1000 flight hours of actual pilot-in-command is required.
3. Multi-engine Airplane: 500 flight hours in heavy multi-engine airplanes, i.e., gross takeoff weight in excess of 12,500 pounds is required.(Up to 250 hours flying time acquired in helicopters may be substituted.)
4. Helicopter: Up to 200 hours of flying time acquired in heavy multi-engine airplanes may be substituted.
5. Small Airplane: 500 hours of flight time in an airplane weighing 12,500 pounds or less gross takeoff weight is required.

For inservice placement actions, flight hours may be waived for candidates who demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.

Other Requirements:
1. Valid State driver's license
2. Fluency in the English language
3. No chemical dependencies or drug abuse that could interfere with job performance
4. A high school graduate or equivalent

IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, all candidates MUST demonstrate one year (52 weeks) of Specialized experience to at least the next lower pay band FV-H/FG-12 or FV-I/FG-13 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience may include but not limited to: experience which provides an extensive knowledge of at least two of the following four areas: 1) Aircraft operations, either in a flight crew member, flight dispatcher, or supervisory position, 2) air traffic control,as a full performance level radar controller, 3) aircraft design, certification, or maintenance, or 4) FAA Aviation Safety Inspector. Extensive training and experience in conducting or managing accident investigations will be considered as a substitute for one of the two required areas of specialized experience.

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the following has been determined to be a selective factor for this position. This means possession of this criterion is part of the minimum qualifications and is essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position. Applicants who do not possess this criterion are ineligible for further consideration.

The incumbent must be able to work in physically demanding and adverse conditions such as in swamps, deserts, on steep, uneven and mountainous terrain.
7. The incumbent will be responsible for the economical, and efficient utilization of all resources committed to the investigation.
8. The incumbent must qualify to obtain and maintain a government issued travel charge card.
9. On occasion, foreign travel will be required.
10. Successful completion of a security investigation will be required.
11. This position is covered by the Department of Transportation's Drug and/or Alcohol Testing Program. Any applicant tentatively selected for this position must pass a pre-employment or pre-appointment drug and/or alcohol test prior to employment or appointment.
12. The selectee will be subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing.
